Description

  • This course includes a week at Borland Camp in Fiordland where we study ecology and do some out-door education

  • During the study of cells we carry out practical work, develop our microscope skills and look at how cells carry out essential life processes like respiration

  • We look at how genes are inherited and then expressed and compare this to the occurrence of various mutations

  • Investigate how the genetics of populations change through time

  • Develop the understanding that allows us to evaluate possible future directions of human biology that may affect us, such as growing body parts in laboratory to replace faulty parts

Prerequisites

Any 12 Credits in Year 11 Science including AS90948

Description

  • Learn to perform a titration

  • Link the structure and bonding of substances to their properties

  • Find out what organic substances really are

  • Delve into the world of acids, bases and equilibrium reactions

  • Discover just what electrons are up to during a redox reaction

  • Perform qualitative analysis

Description

The study of Physics has a range of contexts including:

  • Athletics and Sport

  • Cars (motion and vehicle safety)

  • Waves (sound, water and electromagnetic)

  • Nuclear medicine and power generation

  • Fundamentals of electric circuits

Prerequisites

Any 12 credits in Year 11 Science which should include AS90940. Advantageous to have passed the MCAT (AS91026)

General Science


Description

  • This is a totally internally assessed course

  • This course leads onto Year 13 Science and then onto polytechnic training courses

  • This is a practical and research based course where you will participate in fieldtrips

  • Investigate the local geology of Dunedin and learn about New Zealand's natural disasters

  • Investigate the human body and space exploration

  • Practical investigations using microscopes and plant propogation
