Year 13
SCIENCE

13BIOL

Biology

Description

  • Examine the evolution of species including a focus on the evolution of humans – a fascinating area of biology

  • Study the techniques involved in genetic engineering (including transgenesis and genetic profiling) and its impact on the environment, our health and evolution.  This is becoming an increasingly important aspect of everyday life

  • Investigate the behaviour of plants and especially animals in their environment, including the study of predators, finding mates and why animals migrate across the planet

13CHEM

Chemistry

Description

  • Investigate further applications of Redox theory in the form of Electrolytic cells

  • Expand your knowledge of Atomic Structure and Bonding to include a more in depth appreciation of electron configuration based on quantum mechanics and a more detailed understanding of Shape and Polarity of molecules and Periodic Properties of the Elements

  • We investigate a wider range of Organic compounds, their chemical properties and how to identify them by spectroscopic techniques

  • Expand our understanding of Enthalpy Changes in reactions and the properties of equilibrium and study aqueous solutions in depth

13SCIE

General Science

Description

This course will follow on from the Year 12 Science course.

  • Enjoy Science and wish to build on your Science knowledge so you can make sense of the world around you but don’t intend to study Biology, Chemistry or Physics at Level 3

  • Enjoy Science and wish to do Science achievement standards in addition to those you will be doing in Level 3 Biology, Chemistry and Physics

You will learn about:

  • NZ Native Species plant germination

  • Environmental Science and Issues

  • Life in the Solar System

  • The Dunedin Volcano

This course does not lead onto studying Science at University but can lead on to Polytechnic courses. This course can lead on to Science at University if supported by other Sciences at Level 3.
